Sonny has the right of it. Generally speaking, you want to change which fs the fmt for your variable points to, and not to touch the fs directly. If you do touch the fs, you edit every variable that uses it.

 

For those following along in their post reference guide, we're in Volume 1, Chapter 9, pages 4 to 10. I'm using the Feb 2004 v9.1 guide myself, but this stuff hasn't changed since then.
