PC vs. Mac

From what I understand windows apps will run in the native Mac OSX soon(?). No emulators and no special software. You will really have a choice. PC or Mac. Mac’s are UNIX driven now and intel based. If you choose Mac Hardware, then Mac and Windows software will all be available to you. Now... How long is soon? Who knows. It may be a few more versions of the OS, (lately 1 version a year) but possible. That seems to be the direction they are taking. If it’s the software app you really like and could not really care if it were Mac, Linux or Win. Who cares what the OS is as long as you like it. If it’s correct about the direction Mac’s are going then the consumer will have the best of both worlds (on mac hardware) and it will not matter what the app is written in. I enjoy both Mac OS and Windows. Both have their drawbacks. The Gap is closing.

For now I stick with the PC. Interesting though, huh.

When Apple announced that they were going to an Intel chip set, the Win people oohed and said "so you'll be able to run Win apps?" and Apple said oh no that's not our intention. All the smart people said "YEAH RIGHT!"

Following is a quick response from a friend who knows a little:

I haven`t done any of this stuff but as I understand it there are (2)

ways to run WinApps on the IntelMacs

(1) Using Bootcamp (Apple software) to allow the machine to boot

WindowsXP w/o booting Mac OS X; WindowsXP & associated apps have the

whole machine but the details of accessable ports etc are hazy to me

(2) Using Parallels virtualization app allows Windows, associated

apps & Mac OS X stuff to run along side each other w/o the dual boot

method (http://www.parallels.com/)

(Parallels method also, I understand, allows you to run any other x86

OS as well as MSWindowsXP should you wish to run MSWindowsME, OS/2,

DR-DOS etc)

I`d be careful about either of these w/o actually doing some testing,

particularly when any kind of "copy protection" (dongle etc) might be

involved as I suspect is the case w/these high end apps

You might try checking this website (http://www.architosh.com/) for

some hints

Irongate, do you have some links on running Solidworks on the Mac???

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff,

Yes currently that is the case. Parallels, Boot Camp and so on. You are right. But I still believe it’s only a matter of time before things change to running WinApps on the MacOS natively.

I too would like to see more links from anyone that has them for running our favorite apps from windows in alternative OS’s.

Here is one link, not much.

http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/06/20060630170338.shtml

Ill post more If I find any.

Don’t get me wrong I do like the windows environment.

I did start on the Mac for about 10 years or so, way back. Used both for a while then just windows.

I just really find it interesting. Don’t you?

Flipper

Never Mac'd, know people who have for quite a while. Apples quality is commendable, as is quite the oppsite for usoft ('nother story...)

Yeah, winders has gathered their excrement in one location, about 10 years after the winders intro. Any wonder why MCAM was reluctant to cede the power? And then look what they got. 'Nother nother story.

So is apple takin clue from linux?

Mastercam can be run on new Mac MacTell natively =

I mean under WinXP (dual boot if you want to preserve MACOSX )

That `s the best way .

Forget about emulation ,

I am emulator geek many years ,especially Macs

But does the first way makes a sense ?

You can buy dream monster dream Wintell machine for the money of a Macpro $2499 starting price.

Imac is not for work machine .

Use Wintell machine and be a good boy.

If you want to talk about Macs ,Linux and so

sent me an e0mail

I use Wine for 10 ywaes ,and it has a lot of limitations and is not easy to configure and not 100

% stable .

You will never get tech support for your Mastercam on Macosx under some emmulation .

Wouls I be the tech support ,I would say this

:get supported os ,PC and hardware before any talk

BTW ,are you sure your Hasp will work ?

Yes Mac's are more money.

And you are also buying the name.

(They are a nice well built machine these days, then so are Dell’s which can be expensive too.)

More bang for the Buck can be had on the PC side by far.

Especially if you build your own clone. More configurations also.

But doesn’t everyone see that they are slowly coming together. Mac’s are becoming cheaper and more useful towards the PC side, still retaining what people like in a mac.

PC’s are becoming more creative and media minded like the Mac use to dominate.

The only or one of the only other technology’s is for the OS’s to run each others apps. Wow! That’s cool. Go to a store. Buy some software. And it runs without the “For a Mac” or “For Windows”. Apps will be just Compiled. Not for any particular OS? A universal Compiler. Ah go figure. Software developers could just post and sell their stuff. Never have to worry about the market share. More Apps are created and sold into the windows market because of its market share, no brainer. The Mac people could finally enjoy the wonderful apps on the win side and vise aversa.

I know I know, Its not that easy. Someday Maybe someday….. Oh well dream on.

True Hasps will probably not work now but if that was the way developers went? The hasps would follow too. Ahh its just talk for now. A what if I guess.

Its all just what I think MAY happen in the future by what I read and see in the market.

Bla, Bla Bla. just good discusion. Thanks for it

Hey, Iskander teh Owl Nice pic you create it does it have a meaning?
