Probing - Hermle 430i Heidehein Control

Hello All,

I wanted to know if anyone has post info on probing in a Hermle 5x mill. We use CAMplete for our posting & verification. One of the idiots on my staff is selling to our boss that the probing can be used as a CMM. Where is the info stored or accessed? I need to get something or prove he is a dumbass.

curse.gif Thanks.

Here is my .02. Why on God's Green Earth would you tie a X hundred thousand dollar machine up measuring parts for dimensional layouts. You can using the probing capabilites to validate your part to the accuaracy of your machine and set-up. My general understanding of probing was that it was for automated part set-up, casting validation before machining, and possibly work part rotation. I now you can store values on the control in the registries otherwise some Macros would be useless.

I am definitly not an expert, but using a mill as a cmm doesn't sound like a good productive practice. I am not a production shop so maybe I don't understand the dynamics that would cause this decision to even be evaluated.

Ahhh, he's not

This is what I am into right now and sometime shortly after the first of the yr, first piece inspections will be being done on the machine.

Our purpose is to negate downtime waiting for first piece inspection. We can can our work for dimensional accuracy, our report is sent back, analyze and a report is created. The report is sent to QC along with the part for complete documentation but the prodcution continues.

With that being said, to be truly accurate there are certain things that must be done on and with the machine to verify and maintain it's accuary.

Regular ball bar testing, volumetric calibration to run CP & CPK studies. You can probe accurately on an old machine IF you know where that machine is actually running.

So is he a dumbass, no he's not.

Josh,

All of our 5-axis posts for the 530 control have about 8 200-series probing cycles built in as drill cycles. They are mostly for part setup but a few are for inspection.

I'm not sure if they are the same as probing cycles used on the 430 or not. Perhaps we may be of assistance to you.

I don't see anything for a Hermle. We use the probe for part setting and 3D rotation calculations but not for inspection. This is a prototype machining dept. not production so we can't justify all the metric constraints and cost to qualify our machine as a true gage. Is it really necessary to use valuable machine time for inspection when it may only be one part and we have several millions of $ in inspection and metrology equipment? This is the arguement I'm proposing.

Josh

I have the probe cycles incorparated in the post.

They are special drill cycles. The machine runs the program using the probe dependiny on the cycle. The data is sent out of the machine to a lap top or other dnc connection. We are ready to try these just have to clear up some hot jobs.

"clear up some hot jobs"

Are they smoking or enflamed??? LOL

Some things never change! When you get this proved out I'd like to come by and take a look at it. I need to give "Waddel's Dad" a call anyway so maybe I can get the "Security Clearance" needed to visit! LOL How's the boat running?
