Ok, so all I want to do is to pick points and use them to groove a part (with a cut off tool). When I pick the points that should be tool center & bottom of the groove, mcam goes way too deep in the X direction, cutting off the part!

 

What am I doin' wrong??

How many points are you choosing? And what version Mcam?

 

In parameters, you can select the shape of the groove as well as depth.

Thanks for getting back to me Dave! I'm running V8.1.1, and picking the middle of the line that represents the bottom of the groove. I tried putting a point at the midsection too, and that also did not work. Could I be missing a patch or something?

Mike did you get it to work from 2 points or do we need to Webex?

Im not an expert at Mcam, but here is my take on the problem.

 

When you are prompeted to choose 1 point, 2 points, etc..., the display in the left side of the box points out where to place these points in relation to the groove on your part. If you are choosing points from the drop down box and select the midpoint of a line in your geometry, the toolpath wont fit your geometry. If you want to select lines in your drawing, choose "3 lines" or "chain". Otherwise you will have to put a point(s) on the corner(s) of the groove.

Thanks guys! Yup, a .125 wide insert won't fit into a .125 groove!!!!!!!!!!
