Mastercam X3 random cuts?!?!

Ok, so here is the deal... I am new at Mastercam and am trying to create self teach myself. I do all my drafting in Autodesk Inventor and import the model in. I have posted pictures of what my problem involves so you will be able to see what is going on. I have drawn this model and want to i guess "engrave" the outside edges of the lettering but not actually mill out the letters to full depth. I created a 2d contour toolpath a selected everything on the surface using the wire chain selection option. No problems this far, but when generate the cuts and view them the program puts in these random U shape cuts into the part when they aren't there and I can't get them to go away and just cut the letters. What am I doing wrong here?
