Hugh,

For the short story on splines, nurbs and parametric, go to :

There are several articles on this. Its quite involved but Nurbs will be smoother . New machines will read a nurbs call out in a nc file ( as described in the above referance ) and produce a very smooth surface at high feed rates.

Mastercam does not output nurbs in the nc file yet but this may change as more machines use this info. time will tell
