Ingersoll Chip Surfer

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with Ingersoll's Chip Surfers line? If so, what are your feelings. We are wanting to retool a little back in our Cnc department and these cutters have been mentioned as a possibility. We are mold makers so we use alot of H-13, S-7, P-20 etc.... We are thinking we could use these for roughing, finishing and hard machining.

The one that interests me the most is the High Feed insert for roughing cavities.

We have been using Ingersoll's Chip Surfers for approximately 2 1/2 years, primarily for roughing A-2 and D-2 steel. We have had good success with the Chip Surfers and the Ultra High Feed Tips. For A-2 steel, we run the 3/8" mill at 6876 rpm, 440 ipm and .015" depth of cut. It removes alot of material very quickly.

There are three types of shanks that you can purchase: carbide, heavy metal and steel. The carbide and heavy metal are fairly expensive and for our applications, do not justify the cost. The straight neck steel shanks cost about $70 and last for a fairly long time. When they break, for the price, we just scrap the shank. The diameter of the shanks are the same size as the tip so we grind approx. .020" off of the diameter to keep the shanks from rubbing.

We use the Chip Surfers along with Ingersoll's Formaster Hi-Feed Mills and have been very pleased with both. If you have any additional questions, let me know.
