I feel like a total bone head been away from the machines to long, JParis please do not laugh at me. I have some look ahead questions I remember years ago you explained it very well and I have forgotten alot. One question I have is does nanno smoothing work through 5 axis contouring?

Yes. You still have to turn it on though.

We are just getting strange outcomes with it, I am still not convinced it is tuned right.

Rick, can't speak for 5 axis but I can speak for the 'mid range' (read cheap) machines.

These are not usually configured anywhere near they should be for (talking fanuc here) Ai/lookahead. The 'standard' parameters (ie in non lookahead mode) are different to the parameters that the lookahead uses.

And depending upon the package installed on the machine (fanuc package a, or fanuc package) together with what options (basic lookahead only, or contour control, or nano control, with jerk control, yada yada), makes this a mine field.

Servo tuning isn't too dificult, you can do it yourself and do a cut test and CMM the results.

Usually, the machines are tuned to "worst case scenario", meaning max weight, etc... Sometimes not even that. Depends on the builder.
