STL on Ramdisk

This is a setup that I have been using that is working well and wanted to share. I use STLs in verify quite often and find it takes a long time to load larger files. Same is true for large stock models(when you can get stock model to work on larger files) . So I installed DataRam Ramdisk's free version and setup a 100MB ramdrive. I save my temporary stls here and verify opens these files much faster. I tested a file from the hard drive that took 17 seconds to load (which is a lot when you are programming all day) took 2 seconds for the ramdrive. I also set my temp and Regen files to this drive as Gcode suggested in an earlier post. Something to check out if you use large STLs.

This has been many folks' bone of contention. "I've got XXXgb of ram, why is nothing using it?

I had a RamDisk as well but I didn't notice any difference on my times. This may be cause I have an SSD. But they are indeed fast.

how about a mastercam install on a ramdisk....anyone think that might be faster than an ssd?

 

or any software on a ramdisk....wonder if this would make things faster.

Thats what I had. It wasn't any faster. (That I noticed anyway)

Plus it lead to long start up and shut down times. I know some people don't worry about that but the bigger the ramdrive, the slower the startup. And trust me its very slow.

Well this is annoying. I did my tests again today and I am not seeing a big time difference. My hard drive files are loading fast now. I wonder if it has to do with how much the hard drive is working with other system processes. I will keep testing i guess.

I use very large STL files and find on most large file it causes MCX to crash,is there any other way of fixing this other than a temp ramdisk setup?
