What is the (Machine group properties - Tool Clearance ) good for?

That setting is used in Lathe as a clearance boundary for tool approach and retracts. The offset is made from the Stock you define.

Most of the time, the default settings are good. When doing boring bar work on the I.D., that clearance value can sometimes cause your boring bar to crash into the backside of the bore. For tight I.D. work, I'll set the clearance value to .002.
