The big thing about rotary broaching, if you need to hold a fairly tight angular location tolerance, it can be difficult to achieve..

That's why it's best uses fall into the form category that doesn't require an angular tolerance..

I will be broaching a part that runs on a hex shaft it need to be probably within .002-.005 of perpendicular of the face of the part. Will the broach cut the straight or will it lead off slightly?

  2. I have never done rotary broaching. We have a qty 64 parts that has a hex that needs to be machined. This seems to be the way to machine the hex. 3/8 ID Hex .5 Deep. We are running Haas VF2SS machines. We don't won't the kill the bearings in this machine. So first question is will the machine handle rotary broaching. We don't abuse our machines.

Second question is name brand of Broach. I have been looking at Slater and Polygon solutions. We want to go with the company that offers the most tooling for the holder we buy, then quality of the tooling , then price.

Can anyone recommend what brand you are using and how and why you like it.

    Thanks

Rob. Nice set up. What kind of parts do you make?

Sorry for the delay in getting back on the topic. Been a busy week!!!!

I do small qty replacement parts for several large companies around East Tennessee. Small gauge jobs. Some custom automation jobs. I have been doing this type work for 25 years. If anybody has any over run, I am always open to quote new work. I have several companies that I can give as references. Decided to set out and do my own thing in 2018. So far it has been good. I just wish I had been able to start this deal 10 years earlier. Just wasn't able to get started then.

  4. Temporary home!!! I hope the economy doesn't tank. If things continue as is, I hope to start on a new building or buy something. This will someday become my man cave!!!! This is what a Trump economy can do for you if you are willing to work. Started this in Nov of 2017. Took delivery on a lathe and mill in April of 2018. Quit my worthless job in Sept of 2018. Bought another mill in Dec of 2018. Paid the first 2 off 2 months ago. My plan was to get dept off my back encase the Chinese economy returned. That is what looks like will happen.   But I am out off room. Sorry for hijacking the post. i will stop now. Only machine not pictured is 12-24 surface grinder and welder. God is good!!!!

  5. My biggest concern is to make quick fixes while on vacation, cad or Quickbooks.  That is why I am considering remote desktop. Working from home isn't that big of a deal. I work from home because my shop is behind my house, for now. Less than 40ft  from back door to the shop door, see image. I guess everyone's needs are different.

  6. Will he have a problem with VPN if the machines are not equally matched? That was my biggest question when trying to decide what direction to go, remote desktop or VPN.

My laptop doesn't come close to the power of my office desktop. This was the reason I was leaning on doing remote desktop.

  7. Thanks for your input Aaron. I will continue to way my options. The main thing I am hear so far is seems if using VPN, both computer need to have similar hardware or I could have problems. Is this what you are saying? I just purchased a high end desktop. The laptop and desktop probably want interact properly.

My laptop is" average" Lenovo Yoga 730. It freezes up (lags) sometimes. My guy in the shop, that is most knowledgeable on computer hardware, hates the laptop. He says it has lots of Lenovo software running in the background. he shuts it off and it starts back after the computer is turned off. Does anyone have any input on this?

  8. Good points. My MC reseller said they use Sonicwall. Any suggestions their? Also looks like I probably need to research another local IT guy to help with VPN network. I tried to run MC from remote desktop at a company one time. It was not good. Struggled the whole time.

  9. I am trying educate myself and decide what is best for using Mastercam and other software from my laptop at home. Also for my employees to have access to Mastercam from home. We are using desktop computers at work. I spoke with local computer guy and he says to just use remote desktop. He thinks remote desktop is the better way to go. Just not sure that is best and most secure way to go. Could you give opinions and help educate me the positives and negatives of both options. We are a small job shop. I can give more info if needed.

not sure if you can find a spline broach

That's what I was thinking. But haven't done the rotary broach before. I don't know what is offered.

Talk to Advent, PH Horn or one of the companies that make ID broaches for the CNC Lathe. I have done this going back 15 years on CNC Lathes with no problem. Yes for 6 parts may not break even on the tooling, but being able to do this in house with existing equipment will start setting your shop apart from others.

Did you look at the drawing for spline type? I have been wanting to have this capability but wasn't sure if broaching on a CNC lathe or mill was hard on the spindle bearings.

I will look these guys up over the weekend. Thanks

  12. Thanks for the info!! I think the polished carbide for alum will be best. They were going HSS for weight reduction.

You typically balance a tool assembly not a singular tool.

I didn't think about this. You are probably correct.

    thanks

  13. I have a customer looking for 4mm and 6mm HSS Endmill that are highly balanced for a 40,000 rpm spindle. Do any of you know of such an animal? If so what name brand and type? They are machining a hole in a piece of foam.
