  1. Hi Need help. It's been awhile since I've needed to use solids for any actual machining, but we have a part that has features on 2 sides, and I'd like to see if I can create a quick Negative (Positive?) of the part to make a quick fixture. Thanks John
  2. Hi Can anyone tell me how to figure out the specs to machine a .774 Major Dia -32 Thread? Not sure if there is a standard formula to come up with minor dia. and thread pitch to machine and inspect custom threads. If there is, I don't know it. Thanks John
  3. Thanks. I thought .250 was a little overkill, but since I don't have experience with heat treating, or the materials that require it, I'm a bit lost. Thanks John
  4. Hi Need some recommendations for tooling on a new job. We have 28 pcs that we are machining out of 4340, that will be roughed out, then heat treated to 40 Bhc, then finished. The part is shaped like a "U" with 2 legs, kind of like an Omega symbol. The stock is 1.75 x 10" x 20" and the part has 1.25 walls, with the middle pocketed out. My main question is: what type of tooling do you recommend for all this material removal? for 28 parts, I'm leaning towards indexable tools. The boss wants it set up and running on 2 machines, so I have to double up on everything. Also, these parts need to be roughed, heat treated, then finished. Walls are .250 thick x 1.25 tall. I was planning on leaving .250 per side before heat treat, in case of warpage. Any suggestions? Thanks John JOHN.pdf
  5. Hi Yep, tried both of them. I'll try it again. The Tool Nose Compensation thing is killing me, trying to figure these longhand programs out and modify them!! Ugh!! Nothing matches the prints (as far as code). I've been putting reference numbers in comments, so I can at least see where i'm supposed to be, but If I could do these in Mastercam, it would be SOOOOOO much easier. Well, for me, at least.   6. Yes, It's above. My origin is at the center in X, and the far right at Z. I drew half the geometry (radius) and mirrored it, for reference. Picked the Chain I needed to work on, on the X+ side. What is confusing is that it backplots with the same motion as the longhand program runs, and the long hand program is X+. Mastercam = X-.
  7. Hi I have a question, since i'm brand new to Mastercam Lathe, and turning centers in general. I am modifying an existing program, for an id bore, and on the longhand written program all my X moves are positive. In the mastercam post all the X moves are negative. Using Canned cycle rough and finish, G70 and G71, have the geometry chained and drawn correctly (Pretty sure) and the correct tool, tool turret, etc. selected. Everything matches my existing program, except for the X moves. The machine is a brand new Haas ST30. Thanks John
  8. I like the third Idea. Not really following the first, but I'll repeat it to the boss to sound smart!! It seems like the od was left big when these were threaded. The problem was that the customer supplied the mating part, with no prints, etc., only a sample. Thanks john
  9. Hi Not a Mastercam problem, just a shop problem here. We have a batch (3,600!!) tubes that were not threaded correctly, and was wondering what the best method for chasing the threads, and salvaging the parts was. Luckily, these were run before I got here, so I just get to FIX the mess, not get blamed for it, LOL. Anyways; Specs- 4130 Cro Mo tubing, External thread 1.125-20, threaded about .600 on one end of the part. Tube body is tapered on the other end. Aprox. 12" long. Wall thickness about .100 Any ideas what YOU would do to fix these? Thanks John Spangler
