3+2 new automatic toolpath

Hi Mirek,

In 2021, there are no depth filters available in the toolpath for individual plane depth control in 3+2 automatic. In other words, it tries to cut as deep as the tool/holder allow in order to rough as much stock from your Machining geometry as possible, from each toolplane angle it chooses.

 If you're just trying to do the ball portion, the easy way to force the toolpath to only look at that area is either only select the ball as machining geometry, or draw a block that encapsulates the rest of the stand for the ball and select it as avoidance geometry for the path. IE- you need to tell the path somehow that you only want to cut the ball.

Since this is a simple symmetrical part and it seems like you have a good mental picture of how you want to rough it, I would avoid 3+2 automatic and simply do optirests. You could also change 3+2 to semiautomatic or manual mode and set up the planes you want to come from, which are likely the top plane and the 4 main sides.

what will be the best method for semifinish and finish this ball?

That will depend on your machine, tooling, etc, but a simple way to finish it would be to use a morph or parallel with a 4 axis control strategy. I see this part is probably based off of the Titan 200M. There's a lot of posts and videos of people finishing this style of part with a plethora of methods that should give you some ideas to try. There's no wrong way as long as you learn something about 5 axis programming along the way!

So he could shorten up the tool?

He could do that as well, yep! I would recommend doing this from a selection standpoint, however. Not only does it teach you more about what the path needs to see and how to zero in on proper selection, but it also gives him the flexibility of trying different tools on this tutorial part without having to tie the end result- a perfect working path-  to a specific tool geometry.
