Best Processor for Mastercam?

I'll soon be buying a new Dell Workstation. Which processor would provide the greatest performance?

A) P4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz

512k L2 Cache

2 Mb L3 Cache

B) P4 3.8GHz EMT64

1 Mb L2 Cache

The processor will be working with 2 gigs of RAM and the nVidia Quadro FX 3700. I want a machine that can handle large models and calculate toolpaths FAST.

Processor (A) has the L2 (512k) and L3 (2Mb) cache on chip - 2.5 megs total.

Processor (B) has 1 meg L2 cache and no L3 cache.

Am I right in thinking that (A) has the cache advantage while (B) has the clock speed edge. Which will be of greater benefit in Mastercam. Both processors support HyperThreading (will this benefit me?). Only (B) will support the 64-bit version of XP. Will a 64-bit version of XP benefit me?

BTW Processor (A) costs about $400 more than (B)

I bought the extreme edition at the premium of $1000.00 and I believe the level 2 cache is 2meg.

The performance between both systems is negligable, hence, buy what you want since it really does not matter in the grand scheme of things biggrin.gif

I'd take "B" if my money were on the line personally. Though I have a friend Glenn, that SWEARS by his 64bit AMD. Sez is ".... SMOKES INTEL's ..."

May want to take a gander at that one. biggrin.gif
