Computer Lockups

Recommended Posts

Anti-virus and firewall software/hardware should be standard fare now, just like seatbelts and airbags in vehicles. You wouldn't want to drive without those, right? Same thing when it comes to computing smile.gif Also, IT people should be performing security auditing and patching as needed. If your company doesn't have an IT department, the computer savvy employees should take on this responsiblity.

I know a freak in Wisconsin that developed his own rastor-to-vector style cad cam software that uses Java. I showed him mastercam V7 and he was impressed at the "associativity" stuff, however he didn't like the inability to directly read EPS files. Bullines- because it is Java based wouldn't it work multi-platform? Do you "like" Java?

The beauty of Java; write once, run anywhere. And with Java, that's true for the most part (cough, Microsoft Visual J++ sucks and I'm glad it's dead, cough). Yes, I like Java for the most part because of its portability. However, I wouldn't want to develop a CAD/CAM package with Java, though. It would run really slow because of how Java works. Essentially Java apps and applets are compiled as platform-independent byte code and then the Java Virtual Machine then compiles it to native code for that particular OS. This process is much slower when compared to apps that are natively compiled for a particular OS with a language like C++ or Delphi.

It looks like I, and many others in the computer science field, spoke too soon. Microsoft has killed off Visual J++, only to suddenly revive it as Visual J#. It doesn't seem like Borland JBuilder or Webgain Visual Cafe will be threatened though. Visual J# seems like it's doomed to fail, IMHO. For those who care, read more about Visual J# here. The article includes screenshots of not only the new VS.NET IDE, but a customized Windows XP task bar that looks pretty kewl (possibly the best part of the article) eek.gif

It just goes to show how sneaky and suprising Micro$oft can be wink.gif

Daryl,

May not help but...

In general we have found that Mastercam runs smoother when the operating system is set to balance foreground and background performance equally. Mastercam seems to be performing a number of tasks (file I/O, etc) in the 'background'. We have found that having your op sys prioritizing foreground application performance tends to slow MC down.

This can be adjusted under your operating systems SYSTEM PROPERTIES under the tab labeled PERFORMANCE (NT 4.0).

Maybe this might help.
