Extracting Geometry

I was wondering what people feel is the best way to extract geometry from a solid for a contour. The geometry is complex and I want to do just a 2D contour first so I can fixture the part.

Normally if I have a Solid I create curve one edge, and then xform project. If it's a surface I create curve all edges and project again. Then edit simplify. I have tried using silhoutte boundary and also create solid to 2D profile but have not had much luck. I have managed to machine the part, but was wondering if there is a more efficient way of chaining.

Gerard,

As a rule, I extract very little geometry, I generally machine to the solid as much as I can.

When I do, I like you use create curve edge, I have used silhoutte on a couple of occasions and it worked well for me.

when i have a complicated chain to select, i will copy-window to a new level. then delete whatever i don't want. it's just a simple method, but trying to select a chain from complicated geometry can be anything but simple, so for me, working on a separate level is the key.
