Plunge Roughing

First off, I must say that this forum is teriffic! In the short time that I have been using

MC I cannot count the number of tips of tricks that I have learned by reading the posts

on the forum. Keep up the great work!!!

Now onto my question.

My boss would like me to look into using plunge roughing as an alternative to other

conventional roughing stategies. Example: Surface/Rough/Pocket. Has anyone had any success

using plunge roughing? For both core and cavity parts. I have had no luck finding any

information on the Internet about this milling strategy. Any comments or suggestions

would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanx!

Mike,

Welcome to the Forum. From one Sterling resident to another (in another state). Plunge roughing was just a grid of points to plunge the tool into a surface pocket. It is a quick way of removing a lot of material from a large pocket. In V9, Mcam has included a helical motion in the Surface Rough Plunge operation. This means that instead of Plunging straight down, as with a drill, it can helix into the pocket and remove a large portion of material with the helix motion. This helps for a lot of index mills, which may not be designed to plunge straight down. It also helps with tougher materials, such as stainless steels. HTH biggrin.gif
