Scallop height or distance

I use the filter. I have heard you will get a better finish without it, but we don't try for that good of a finish where I work, so I go for the smaller program.

Scallop or stepover, dose not make any differenc. You change one and the other changes. They are coresponding values. You get this scallop height (.xxxx) at this stepover (.xxx). I usually try for a scallop height of (.0002"). For a 1" ball mill this would be (.03") stepover, for a 1/2" ball mill it would be (.02"), and so on.

Depends on your surface finish requirements. For rough surfacing aluminum I use .005 scallop height and for finishing I use 1% of the tool dia as my step over. No need to polish anything at 1%. Filter set to 2:1 on rough and finish paths. smile.gif
