Magnetism and Lathes

That doesn't happen unless you run over a mirror with the hi-lo you are using to move the lathe to it's destination while several black cats cross your path. I'm sure any effects involving magnetism and lathe positioning are extremely minimal if existant at all. Anyone else?

Has anyone ever heard of induced magnetism based on lathes being set-up in a North-South orientation (spindle North)?

Nooooooooo ...... Kinda hope I never do..

I did see a guy waving his outstreched arms in an open field in Sedona, AZ. They might have been north and south...

smile.gif LOL -- First of all those were some great (funny) responses!

Reason I asked is that we will soon be relocating the shop and someone brought up the alignment of the lathes issue (again.) Our current layout took that into consideration. I had never heard of it, but I figured some of you may have in your collective experiences and readings.

Coil some insulated wire around the part to be turned, carefull align and then duct tape two strong mags 180 degrees apart to the lathe, with one N and one S pointed at the coil (the coil freely rotates between the poles)..... you'll have to experiment with a splitring/comutator and brush to get the little electrons out of the coil..... but you should be able to get a charge out of this! Moving a conductor through a mag field will inducte a current in the wire(conductor)....... now all you have to do is catch all them little electrons........ btw the earths mag field is far too weak to induce a charge on a rotating object in a lathe......... but a static elec. charge is another matter..... no pun intended. rolleyes.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif
