Robert, you're absolutely right.

When tuning a machine, it's important to have the machine setup the way it's going to run (i.e. average to max weight of part AND fixture you plan on running on the moving table(s)) AND tune it to thos kinds/types of parts you plan on running in said machine.

The big thing that most machine tool users don't realize is that when a machine leaves the factory, they have the machine tuned anticipating a "WORST CASE SCENARIO". Which means they tune it for maximum reccommended weight PLUS a certain fudge factor so they don't burn up drives. THEN it's up to the customer to tune it to their specific application if the factory preset performance is not acceptable. Some people moan and complain about this, but I have to side with builders on this one. Above all they have a responsibility to protect the machine and it's components according to specification.

Whatever tuning costs, it's worth it over the life of the machine. For your investment, you could reap as much as a 50% increase in overall performance or more depending on the application. Now with that said, if you're running little widgets basically contour/pocket/drill... you're not going to see a huge increase in performance, but generally you will see an increase. Now, Mold/Die, those folks generally see the greatest benefit from tuning and option purchase, next would be Aerospace.

Hope tha explains it ok.

James,

I feel embarassed now at having asked if you had done some testing!

WOW. I read the link, very interesting. It is amazing the time differences between G08 & G05.1.

The machine being made by fanuc, I would (obviously) assume has been tuned to be the best that it can be.

What happened if you ran it in normal (non G08/G05) mode?

Without meaning to hijak the thread, I have uploaded a picture (G05.1 Test.jpg) into the FTP site's 'Unspecified uploads' directory.

This shows the ploughed field finish that we get while running G05.1 (and also G08).

The machine runs very accurate (200ipm feeds)with good finishes in standard (non G08/G05.1 mode).

Has anyone ever seen anything like it before?

I assume (from reading James and Roberts posts) that it would be servo tuning required?

Thanks,

Terry
