a little 5-axis surface machining help?!

WC_PATTERN.MC8 is on the FTP. We only need to cut the green and red surfaces.

I've put a flow5ax path on the red surface, but would have MAJOR clearance problems. Is flow5ax the way to go with this? Or is there a better approach such as a rotated tool plane, which I'm told is a "3 1/2 axis" cut? confused.gif

We are using Mill 8.1.1 and have cut one simple 3ax surface "cavity" successfully so far, but this 5ax stuff is confusing. eek.gif Any experienced insight would be very helpful. smile.gif Thanks for your help!

Eric,

The machine is working fine for the most part. We do have MPQUINT5.PST and have to make some minor additions and changes to our posted files before running. But we can live with that for now.

Most of what we have to do deals with running in the G48 mode. We also have to pay close attention to our B and C angles for clearance purposes. For example we may need B-90 and C135 to trim a part without the C-arm hitting, but get B+90 and C315 causing problems.

We are still way down on the learning curve, especially with 5ax surface machining. I thought this was the fun stuff?

dont forget you can force the B axis positive or negitive

using the misc. interger settings for each toolpath.

Read the first 2 or three pages of the post with notepad. and play around with the values.

really just do not assume that it will work... be very carefull. and test all 5 axis programs with the tool out of the spindle and a finger on the STOP button.
