Should be an easy one?

I want to rough mill that step out with a 4" dia face mill. The step is about .500 deep. I would like to take about 5 or 6 passes. The sides of the face mill are at 45 degrees. I will need the cutter to fall back in X for each depth cut. Otherwise as it machines deeper, the last cut at each level is going to be huge. The block is a solid, and I have tried Surface - rough, but get less than desirable results. How about a hand?

try tapered walls in depth cuts @45 deg

if only .500 deep why not use 2D contour and step down .030-.050 leaving .125 on xy that way after you can finish side wall with 90 degree cutter

Ended up using 2D contour with tapered wall. I set the taper at 50 degrees to keep the cutter from full engagement onthe insert heighth.
