Lathe tooling

I need to enter some lathe brazed E and ER style tooling. Is there a library available or do I have to create each tool? Also I have the cutter dimensions but mastercam askes for the TPI. How do I caluclate the TPI based on cutter dimaension?

I have not seen or heard of any tool libraries other than the ones that come bundled into the Mastercam software. If you use "create a new tool", and you choose the threading tool category, it has a field for TPI. If it is a general threading tool that can be used for various TPI, I would just enter your most commonly used TPI and feed rate. Then for each job you program just change the TPI and feed rate accordingly with "edit the tool".

 

If you think your "cutter dimensions" are only good for a specific TPI, then it should be listed in that manufacturer's catalog. This is not something you would normally calculate based on cutter dimensions.

Thank you. I noticed that with some manufacturers that the cutter point for the 60deg thread is only about .1" deep limiting the TPI by how deep the thread can be cut before hitting the cutter shoulder. I guess I will start my own library.
