Lettering

My students are making a key chain that looks like a piston. We want to put the name of the school on the top center of the piston and then put the name of the course around the top outside edge of the piston in a circle. How can I do this?

If the lettering is going on a flat surface, use create, next menu, letters. It will prompt you for lettering on an arc. Just answer the questions and it should work.

If it is going on the round you need a 4th axis.

I have better luck drawing text in Corel Draw or AutoCAD then importing it to MC. Corel has very fast and easy to use text tools for lettering on arcs and curves.

You can also use chain text ,this will follow a contour and place the letters along te chain.

 

if the pistin is raised and you want to engrave on it say raidal then use project.

Chain text? I've never tried that before. I've gotten quite adept at Modify/Drag and Modify/Rotate and monkeying with individual letters...Chain text will lay text along a curve/spline/edge chain??

 

Can't wait to get into the shop and check it out...

chain text is a c-hook available in version 9.1, so you must ahve 9.1 becuase it's not in 9.0

Another way to do lettering or logo on the outside diameter is the Xform/roll. It works very well I use this verse project for all 5 axis toolpaths control chains and get much better and more predictable results. Just my 2 cents worth.

One way is to use Create, Curve, Project and you can contour on a revolved surface.You can also project the toolpath, which doesn't work as well because it'll leave a heavy cut on a steep surface. Remember to use a small ball end mill on the former.
