MasterCam file converter

I have been asked if I can convert an MC9 file back to MC6.1.3.

The file is a 3D model of a Kaiwa helicopter fuselage to be machined for a retirement gift.(A college project I believe)

I have access to MC8.1.1 & MC9.

Is it possible to do this conversion successfully or am I likely encounter errors due to parameters or operations in the MC9 file that the earlier versions won't recognise?

Hi Shirl1,

 

you'll be able to convert the file no problem just by doing "file get" and then change the "file of type" mc9 to pre 7 (*.ge3)but you won't get the toolpaths with it because of major changes between both versions.Good luck!

No, renaming won't work in this case. There have been too many changes to our Database since V6. I would recommend simply writing out to IGES from V9 (or V8) and then reading it into V6

.... Or, if you want to take the long way home, from V8 Convert to an MC8, then go to V8 and Convert to an MC7, then from V7 you can save as a GE3 readable in Version 6.

Definitely the long way around, James, and he mentioned only having access to version 8.1.1 and version 9.

 

Whichever way it is done, any toolpaths are lost, so if there are toolpaths, it might be a better idea to update the version 6.1.3 user's post processor to version 9, post the toolpaths, and send them to the version 6.1.3 user.

 

Sending a suggestion to the version 6.1.3 user that it might be a good idea to update to version 9 might also be a good idea, there have been a lot of improvements in surface toolpaths since version 6.

If you want to send toolpaths that they can import to V6 you should be able to go into nc utilities, post processor, run old. This should create an nci file that can be backplotted in V6. It's been a while so I am not sure about the specifics. Let us know what works.

He could probably get CD's of V7.2c and V6.13a from his reseller if the above mentioned ideas don't work. Yes this is indeed the long way home but it will work.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I now know that the conversion is possible.

It will be a week or so before I will see V9 again to attempt this.

I will let you know how successful it is.
