RDRAM

I am looking to add memory.

(P4 Win ME 1300MHz)

I currently have 4 x 64MB RDRAM PC800 RIMM modules = 256MB total.

I want to exchange two of them for 512MB each.

My questions are:

Where will I notice any differences?

Would adding 2 x 256MB instead be good enough?

Do you have any suggestions on where to purchase these outrageously expensive modules?

Direct from Gateway they are $904 for 2 x 512MG = 1GB or about $800 for 4 x 256MB = 1GB or $1800 for 4 x 512MB = 2GB.

It looks like my largest files are 10-15MG. The only time I have run into problems on these is the extended time it take to choose 20,000 drilling entities with-in a certain defined area. Sometimes it takes so long, I think it forgets where it is and just gives up.

Adding RAM is usually one of the simplest ways to boost performance.

Now doubt about that, but...

You are STILL running Windows 'ME' frown.gif

Microsoft says ->

"Windows Me and Windows 98 are not designed to handle more than 1 GB of RAM. More than 1 GB can lead to potential system instability."

But, at bit more searching finds potential problems with more than 512meg.

WinME can't handle more than 512 megs of memory

That's funny. In my experence, any system with more than 4MB of RAM that is running Win9x/ME is unstable. Your Mileage May Vary.

Win ME is a dead end and far more buggy then win98SE.

Both of them can handle correctly memory up to 128-256 MB.

Win Me has a lot of specific bugs of it`s own and demands the good ammount of tweaking for a serious resource -demanding tasks.

From the other hand there is a Win2000 Pro

which is a good and stable system with a lot of fine features - now a standart for a desktop system for the resource - demanding tasks like a CAd-Cam programming .

If you don`t have very obsolete DOS programs that you need to run a lot , go with win2000 pro and

you will never regret.

I keep win98 only because of a need to run a

lot of old dos programs that not always possible to run under WIN2000.

WinNT ,2000 and XP are not DOS based,

they emmulate DOS under the virtual machine session which has its limits.
