Maple

Hey guys,

I'm not a router guy but for a project I'm working on I decided to use a block of Maple as a setup piece to make sure verify isn't missing anything.(expensive block of material and I only need one part)

 

I'm not really sure what speeds and feeds to start with. I'm guessing the spindle could run at max(10,000 RPM) without a problem but I'm hoping to bump the feed as fast as possible. The part will be aluminum. I'm guessing I can run a lot faster on the maple though.

 

It's a 6" square block and I will mainly be using a 3/8 ball mill on most of it.

 

It will be 3-d toolpaths mostly.

 

60 IPM? 80?

try to use a roughing ball if possible. depending on the kind/quality of the maple, it will splinter. having the roughing endmill will reduce the splinter factor.

What do you think for a feed rate?

3/8 ball - 8000 rpm @ 150/250 ipm. depth and feedrate depend on the type of toolapth - starting outside or inside, do you have excess stock on the outer edges in case of blow out?

 

material for final pass, depending on geometry and finishing inside or out, i will leave .05-.125 of stock.
