We are using MasterCAM X4 MU3 ATP here at Kelsey WoodWorks. We do design work, with MasterCAM CNC output as one of our options.

After trying different labeling conventions, we have standardized using Thermwood layering names and designations:

layername Z#P### D#P###

Where Z stands for Depth of Cut, "P" the decimal point, and # for numerical digits. "D" stands for bit diameter, which is usually optional.

In the design documents we export Layered DXF files using the layer name and depth, usually without the bit diameter.

We define our Operations using the Layer-name, Depth of Cut, and Bit Diameter designations. It makes is quite easy to mix and match up layer names with Operations in our Strategies.

I have also looked (and am looking) for other layering conventions used by other CNC machinery, but have had the best luck using the Thermwood layering conventions (Page 69-Control Nesting Manual).

We import our data using the KCDw format, but create our import list and DXF files using Alibre Design.
