Okuma Super Nurbs

We might be in the market for another 3axis VMC soon, and I was wondering if someone can tell me exactly what this option does, and when it would be used.

Does it allow for faster feedrates with more accuracy than the Hi-Cut feature does?

I do a lot of dynamic milling, and a lot of jobs I do surfacing on... the rest is more or less 2D work.

Thanks.

Super Nurbs is both a software and hardware upgrade. The processor is 3.5 times higher clock frequency and 1.5 times faster memory access speed over the standard OSP processor. On the software side Super Nurbs uses similar adaptive feedrate and accel control as Hi-Cut but it adds more look ahead and shape reconstruction. The shape reconstruction smooths out the path to be closer to the cad file that Mastercam uses to generate its point to point moves. The result is faster speeds and better surfaces when 3d milling.

I would say it depends on the finishes you need and the percentage of 3D work you do. If 10%-20% of the machine time is 3d and the rest 2d, then the extra time to finish slower with Hi-cut is probably ok. If you do a lot of mold work with hours and hours of 3d finishing time and you need to minimize polishing/bench work than it is definitely worth it.
