Axis Limits - Multiaxis Surface

X4 MU3 & X5 MU1. I am trying to rough out a plug for a car fender mold. I am using modify motion when tool hits the limit. What in the name all that is right is causing the tool to double? the stepover amount where the tool hits the limit? This happens in both versions listed. I haven't done a ton of 5-AX programming in a while, but I'm not a novice at it either. I am a big fan of Mastercam and have been for a long time (V6), but I'm also getting pretty tired of trying to teach folks the software and having to explain "well that is the way it used to work, but it looks like it is broke now".

:D:lol:

Hi Travis!!! Hope all is well? I think I know what you did. turn your angle increment in the tool axis control to 1. I would bet you have it on 2? From the time on your post looks like you were maybe up too late or had too many Thanksgiving spirits?! All I ever see is what looks like a slight adjustment right at the point of the limit? I assume you are talking about the classic multisurface toolpath? I seldom use that anymore since X5 released. the more advanced paths give me much more control. Hoping X6 is gonna have a magic button that toolpaths the part by itself!!!

@ Dave S, I see once again that the student has surpassed the teacher. It took me a second to recognize who you were. I don't do enough 5-ax anymore to be great at it. Maybe I should come take a class from you. AS far as my typing/grammar goes I guess it is just the way my brain works. I hope you and your family are doing well and I hope your business is good. I personally have taken on way more stuff than I can get done, so I am working nights, holidays, and weekends. I need to learn to say no.

The path shown in this screenshot is a classic multi-surface, locked to 4axis with rotation about y. Z axis limits are set to min30 and max 60. when the surface normals actually are 30 and 60 the tool gap greatly increases. take away the axis limits and it looks good. This also shows in verify. Since I only program on rare occasion anymore I haven't learned the new multiaxis toolpaths.

hmmmm....if i change it to a ball end tool it cut's fine. it's only when I use a straight that i can recreate your issue? may have to trick MC and tell it you are using a ball? that part should still cut good i think???

I may be missing something else as well? I would be interested in seeing someone elses solution. it just doesn't seem right that i have to cheat the software? And how do you teach people that in a class??? heck that's your problem not mine!!! :D:lol:
