Tailstock Pressure

I have a customer who is asking me for a chart with a rough guideline of tailstock pressure based on the part size. This is not for face driving work, it is barstock in a 3 jaw. I was looking and haven't really found anything. He said he knew it would only be a rough guideline, but it would be nice to have a decent starting point.

Do any of you know of any decent charts like this?

I don't know of any chart that could possibly tell you that because there are so many variables. Even if there were a chart I wouldn't use one. The shape of the part, the thickness of the material, the distance between centers, and the size tool are just a few things that will all play a part in how much pressure you need. Chip load is a big factor as well. And how you machine the part. That's why we make setup parts. Is this in a lathe or a mill?

I agree with you 100%! That is almost word for word what I told him, but he still thought maybe I could get him something. I figured I would ask here before I go back just on the off chance someone's got something. This is a lathe BTW

Basically, if the material and shape of the part can handle it, crank it up.

Heavy enough to stop chatter, light enough to not deform the part. Now all you have to do is put that data in chart form.

It also depends upon the size of piston that the pressure is cranking against....

I don't think I'd advise anything, because as soon as something flies, he'll be right at you saying 'you said this pressure and it wasn't enough'

It's not that hard to figure out. I mean if is a really complex part with voids and such, and there is the possibility the tailstock is going to crush the part always error on the side of "crush the part"
