.063 1.9 deep in 304

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Got a couple hundred .063+.002 -0 flat bottom holes going 1.9 deep in 304. We are having a taper drill ground to handle the flat bottom but i'm looking for something to drill to depth. Trying to avoid the gun drill. (.4 IPM) Machine is HMC with 1000psi TSC. Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Mitsubishi MWS come in 1.6mm @ 12, 20, 25, and 30 L/D. With that many holes I would go with a 12xD, then 20xD and then finish with a 30xD. Reduce spindle, feed into the pilot hole, kick up the RPMS and go. From my experience it always seems like the 30xD MWS only stock in Japan so it takes a week or so to get some.

Well, job has been set ups and running for a few days. Ended up going with a regular cobalt taper length drill going from zero all the way down at 45sfm and .0008/rev pecking from 1xd to 1/2xd half way down.] Looked at the Mits drill but I was told that 1000psi would not be enough to make it work well in this situation and although I wanted to at least try, it was close to $500 and a few weeks. Right now we're getting a pretty predictable 20 holes/drill. Set up tool monitoring with a couple of back up tools and it's going pretty well unattended.
