Finish Turning Depth

We're turning some H-13 and am wondering what a typical finish DOC for a DNMG insert typically is.

It depends mostly on the geometry of the insert and how rigid the set up is. I am turning some H13 now with a Seco DNMG 432 MF2 TP1500 insert. Finish cut with is .02" per side and the chips are long curls. More depth of cut would be better, but my set up won't allow it. Basically, you need depth of cut to be a little more than nose radius or you will end up with stringy chips that wad up all over everything.

I worked in a small shop many years ago and all the owner used were 80 deg diamond inserts for rigitity reasons and we would also use left handed tooling to put all of the pressure on the machine instead of pulling up the turret. Depending on how u program the part we would use a .015 rad tool at .004 per revolution with a .005 doc. Now if u are facing and dragging the tool then u would only want to leave .002 on the face for finish.

Knowing what the application is is key. For a 2" diameter and 1.5XD I might do .035 Radial DOC. 1/2" Dia at 5X D, prolly not
