Yes, another angle head thread

Recommended Posts

We cut allot of "G18" semi circles where center line is about Y axis kellered along X axis. I'm looking at getting a 45° head for our 3 axis dept because we run into allot of situations with tiny (.060R) fillet radii at the bottom of walls, running up said half-circles. 45 head would allow the use of fairly stubby endmills (band-aid 5axis solution).

questions / suggestions needed are:

1. is there a 45 head that can be easily swung 180° without losing more than .002-.004" accuracy? no re-indicating; i'm thinking of a spring loaded pin or just a custom anti rotation clamp on spindle. manual loading is acceptable.

2. what would be the preferred programming/ setup method for inexperienced operators? would you use a tool setter to obtain the radius and input that into Misc. values.. etc? It would be nice if all the operator had to do is set the TLO same as a tool directly in spindle.

TIA

good point I hadn't really considered. there would be some cycle time doing leftovers. At the least we would want to have a coolant nozzle hitting it...

this would be a pretty light duty application on urethane lasting minutes, not hours.

anyway if it wasn't already obvious with above explination, i would want to cut the right side with one program, flip the head around 180 and cut the left side with a second.

Operators are going to need training no matter what method you use.

Right angle heads are easier as you can use G43 in 2 planes with 2 different offsets to get the positioning correct.

As soon as you go non-orthogonal, I treat it like a 5-axis machine where the tool length and angle head gage length become part of the equation.

FWIW,

The duty time and performance of a BIG-Daishowa is arguably the best in the industry.

When it comes to tooling, you get what you pay for.
