picking up tooling ball with Haas Renishaw probe

Recommended Posts

So we have a new part that we are working on and it will require picking up the center of a tooling ball to indicate the center of the part for X and Y location and also establish the vertical location for centerline of the tools. I am assuming I can do this by using the standard measuring cycles for probing a boss and then use the Z surface probing routine once the probe is positioned X and Y over the part. Is this feasible or is there a better way? I have never done anything like this.

thanks, LeoC

You should be able to use your Probe to do this just fine. Set XY first, then move to X0 Y0, and Probe Z. Remember to subtract half of the Ball Diameter from the Z Axis Position Register for your Work Offset. Typically, you always want to use the "Center Point" of the Ball as the Work Offset location.

Position your Geometry in Mastercam so that the Center of the Ball is at the Origin (or move the Origin to the Ball Center). This means all your NC Code comes from that position as the XYZ Zero.
