Our designers us UG's NX for all our designs and they use solids, however our CAM guys 3 of us on X9 and a 4th one uses power shape / power mill,  not sure how power mill works, but when I was moved off the machines into programming all our Mastecam guys use surfaces not solids. in the system configurations page the setting are shown in attached pic. not sure if anything could be set or added to them to help make the surfaces better like you mentioned about them not being normal to the bottom surfaces. these are setting we have used for years just because that's how they were when whoever here started using Mastercam.
