Call me old school but I like an absolute value (talking milling 4ax/Hori work).

The first thing I'd do is look at the clearance needed (ref point height) for an index, make it a round figure (say 150mm), then write it down on my pad while grammin the whole part.

Then when posting/NCPlotting, I could scan down the prog for every index move, and before that should be the Z150 retract. Easy to check and be safe IMO.

If they were associated and the part is odd shape, when scanning down the prog/NCPlotting, every index would possibly be a different height, and I wouldn't easily know if that's cleared or not...
