ok found something else. I looked back at some old programs I wrote and number drills were described as "#7 drill" not NO.7 this must be the difference. I don't really have any custom tools so is there a way I can change their description in the mc library tu use the # sign?

what if I went into the tool library and deleted all of the periods after the NO on each tool?

it posted properly to the nci file. it had the complete description including the period. does this mean its the post?

thanks john! that did work. im just selecting tools from the standard tooltabe included in mc. is ther something in my post not letting it read past the period?

ok ive been playing around with this and found something out. if I select a drill that is a fraction(1/8 or so) it will output (1/8 drill) in the description at the top of the program and also when it calls the tool. just like it always has for me thru many many years. if I select a drill that is a number drill,it will only output (NO) even though the tool name is say"NO. 77 DRILL" any ideas? this is driving me batty

since weve loaded x9 if I pick a drill from the catalog its not posting its description..for instance if I pick a no 7 drill all it outputs in the code at the top of the prog is (T3 I NO I H3 I D3 D0.201 I DRILL/CBORE) and at the actual toolcal in the prog this is what I get T3 M06 (NO) any ideas? seems to be only with drills

nope, brochures,installs and pdfs but no sample files.

students loved it and we were all very surprised at how well it came out. we are going to try doing something in marble next week. he says this is even more difficult.

sorry but im having trouble again with this and the new install of x9. following the instructions above I don't see "assign tool numbers sequentially." am I doing something wrong? I can change it for one session only in the machine group properties tab at the left of the screen.

our IT dept just installed x9 on a new computer for me. I believe they downloaded the install off the mc site and it has no sample files in it. I also have a thumbdrive that our reseller sent me and I cant find any sample files on it either. where can I find the x9 sample files ?

seems to be engraving well too! im using a Harvey 45 deg engraving tool and im engraving a very detailed dragon into the granite.

I put the slab in the haas vf5 and ramped a 6 inch circle .125 deep at 4000 rpm without incident. now ill try v carve engraving it.

a student brought a pc of granite from the shop he works in last nite in votec school. we have taken a field trip to his shop before and I was amazed at how they machined these huge granite slabs. they would drill a hole and then send a big 1 inch or more special endmill right thru the 1 to 1.5 thick slab and ripped around it at about 50 in a min! no coolant just water. he wants to know if we could engrave or do something like a "V" carve graphic on the face of the plate he brought in. will an endmill even scratch this material? can it be done?

thanks for the replies, something is definitely wrong.it very slow and acting weird. they are coming down shortly to reload it.ill let you know how it goes. im going to tell him about the updates too. our mc computers are not online do I get these off the mc site?

no, we haven't installed any updates. unfortunately that's up to out IT dept. I will have to look into it. could it have somehow changed on its own? it worked fine the end of last year. even just to reload x8 ive got to have them come down and do it and there are ALWAYS problems.

im using a computer we haven't used since vo tec school ended last year.im not sure if one of the students messed with anything or not but when I fire up mc x8 it opens the way im used too with design as the default but there are no toolbars at all at the top. I have to go to settings ,load workspace and select something to get any toolbars at all. is there something wrong?once I close mc I have to do it all over again too.

seems theres something funny going on with this. when we single block it and have the prog on the screen ,it jumps right over this line like its not even there and goes right to the m30. very strange as it stops on every other block including lines that have nothing but the end of blk symbol. -
adobe illustrator. I need to get a vector that is an ai file into mc but I don't have adobe illustrator. how about a cdr file? corel draw? (I don't have this either)

thanks, ill give it a go. we will be doing projects in mc soon but I tell them they need to know whats going on at the machine controller too. nobody wants to be that guy that's asked to do a simple square or circle with cutter comp and has to go to the computer to get it done! -

weve done this before on other projects and its worked fine. mc will cancel comp after a rapid z move too. I told them its easy to just cancel the comp by going to the exact position you are at now but with a g40 and it only moves the amount it was comped. we have also cancelled comp by going g91 x0 y0 to the exact same position we ended up at and it would move just the comped amount. this is a different has than we normally use though.
