  1. ok so just a little update to this. we had a very knowledgeable haas guy here to train on our umc 750.he also is a pro in mc. I described what happened and he said he had never seen this before. I reset the arc defaults in mc to .005 and 2500 and reposted it. I put this in our vf 5 thinking it would do the same thing but it took it all the way through and ran fine. then I put it in our newer tm2 with a newer control and ran it there. rapid was at 5 % and the feed was slow. when it got to the arc at the end of the program the machine took off so fast that there was no way to hit the estop. the machine traveled beyond the software and even the hard limit and wiped out the springsteel waycover . when the mach alarmed out it shut the servos down. when I fired it back up the y axis lunged forward about a 1/2 inch because it had jammed itself past the limit. he called haas and they said the problem was that the machine needed a software upgrade which he did. now it just alarms out saying arc too large. im not sure yet what the max size it will take. this alarm is ok if it prevents this from happening again but im still confused as to why it ran fine on an older machine.
  2. sorry I guess I didn't explain right. this is an older has without the directory or folders. with the type of work im doing lately I will just post one op ,then after that's ok post the next op. its usually a 1 pc prototype. if I save a prog to the thumbdrive I can arrange it by date so its at the top but when I read it in the haas it can be anywhere on the drive. sometimes ill have to go thru several pages till I find it. I know the best answer would be to keep the thumbdrive blank or nearly empty but that never happens. and yes I have removed the thumbdrive wo pushing origin with the same result you had!
  3. I have a collection of about 5 thumbdrives in the shop that I use on a regular basis. some have a lot of stuff on them and some have not so much. when I post a program to these the program just seems to go randomly anywhere on the drive and ive got to search for the program in the has controller. is there a way to somehow force it to the top of everything else ?
  4. default smoothing. I know you loose accuracy on corners with this set on rough but everything runs so much faster and smoother. im curious if this is set to rough and your finish tool has a slow federate ,does it actually affect anything? it seems to also work with setting 85 "max corner round" if the federate is slow doesn't it just go to the programmed path anyway without rounding anything?
  5. that seemed to work very well! cant wait to try it
  6. thanks john. I did not realize bad endpoints would go in a rapid motion. I figured the controller would alarm out.
  7. thanks, we are getting training on the 5 axis by cimquest soon.hopefully they can fix it for me. the post is custom only in the way that it treats subs.i worked with someone from prism yrs ago to perfect it and he finally got it perfect. maybe now posts are as advanced as what we created back then. I still don't know why this arc move took off in a rapid motion.
  8. I tried 3 other posts that came with mc and none of them ouput the arc at all.there must be something in my post doing it. any idea on what to change? my post is custom made by prism eng for ver 9 years ago.
  9. the only thing I think it could have possibly been was the geometry we were cutting had to be shrunk way down to fit.as we did this we got a couple of warnings about zero length line. I guess we scaled it under the max it could be scaled but it did chain ok and it didn't have any breaks. maybe there was something left that could only be picked up by the max rad tol of 2500 in the create arcs box?
  10. thanks for the reply. we use x8 in school because its all the laptop we use can handle. we were running an engrave prog on a project and on one of the very last moves the machine made a horrible rapid like move, ruined the part and alarmed out the haas we were using. I looked at the code and there was an arc at the end with an I of 560.9079 and a J of 2094.4913. I single stepped it back in mc verify and saw no arcs in the area it did it in. also the backplot and verify showed nothing out of the ordinary. even watching the commands I saw no arcs. I noticed the default parameters in the filter box were set to 0 and 2500. I changed them to .005 and 200 and the arc in the code disapeard. if the haas could not process an arc that large shouldn't it have alarmed out at least with an overtravel before it attempted to contour it? also the machine took off as if it were in a rapid move as it did this even though the last command was a g01. of course this all happened on the last move on a students project we were working on with the whole class looking on!
  11. have you ever had something post but did not show in verify or backplot? once in a while this happens but it always seems to be while using engraving.
  12. ok I found out how to save it in defaults but im still curios about the other questions. if the has cant handle an arc that large wouldn't it give me an error rather than try to do it in a rapid motion?
  13. we use x8 in school because its all the laptop we use can handle. we were running an engrave prog on a project tonite and on one of the very last moves the machine made a horrible rapid like move, ruined the part and alarmed out the has we were using. I looked at the code and there was an arc at the end with an I of 560.9079 and a J of 2094.4913. it didn't even appear to have an arc in the geometry on the screen in this area. also the backplot and verify showed nothing out of the ordinary. even watching the commands I saw no arcs. I noticed the default parameters in the filter box were set to 0 and 2500. I changed them to .005 and 100. how do I get it to stay there? also why did it seem to move in a rapid type move? there was never a g00 and it should still have been in feed.
  14. filter 20% on cut tol or line arc tol? if I give a higher % to the line arc tol does it try to create arcs instead of lines?
  15. I was always a little confused with this page.i usually leave the rounding tol off and play with the slider on the 1st 2 to get arcs to output. if I slide the filter closer to the line-arc tol does it try to create arcs instead of lines?or is it the other way around? I think in ver 6 there was a slider that would reduce nc code size. for me that was easy to understand and get what I wanted.
  16. thanks john ,but cant I still get a complete go2 or 3 with a z move like I can on other toolpaths? how could I get it to break it into just 2 arcs? what is making it break into such small arcs?
  17. im trying to finish the inside of a contour that looks just like the id of a giant salad bowl.im trying to use this toolpath thinking I could get a continuous spiral . ive played with all of the filter and smoothing settings but cant get a decent toolpath using arcs. I can get a path that ouputs arcs but they are very small .I was hoping for something that would go a whole revolution in one arc. am I doing something wrong? this is in ver x9
  18. yes but toolpath changes drastically with each pass.i think It would add too much "air" if I were to just transform the final pass outward 9 times
  19. wow, both of these methods work great! I never would have thought of using ramp with plunge. thank you! offsetting the geometry 9 times does exactly what I want it to do but the ramp method is simple and just a few more clicks from what I have now. the only thing is that follows the same path back to the start.
  20. tried that. it doesn't work with multi passes. looks like im going to have to copy this op 10 times without multi passes.
  21. i have a contour that I am using depth cuts and multi passes on. im using a sharp aluminum insert cutter and the depth of cut is shallow. when it gets down towards the bottom it leaves just a thin sliver on the floor that im afraid is going to fold and not cut taking my insets out.using depth cuts along with multi passes is there a way to have it cut the depth cuts down to the final depth before advancing to the next multi pass or am I going to need to add a lot of operations to accomplish this?
  22. once in a while one of my engraving programs just stops in a cut. it stopps because its stuck on a very large g02 or 3 with a gigantic radius that the machine I guess cant handle. its one of the filter settings and ive left it at the mc preset which is very high. anyone know what the largest programmable radius is on a haas?
  23. I have a very large shaft that I have to machine in place. it is on a huge machine that is damaged somewhere so it cannot be rotated under its own power and at this time cannot be disassembled either.the shaft is about 25 to 30 ft long. there is a very precision ground polygon on the end of the shaft ,after that the shaft steps up around an inch and is round.the polygon is around 6 inches in dia at its base circle. I have to machine an undercut 1/8 wide and about 1/8 deep where the polygon meets the straight part at the shoulder.it also has to follow the polygon shape. I cant drag this monster to a horizontal cnc. any ideas at all on how to machine (or grind) this thing in place? even if I had to build some type of machine to clamp on the end and rotate it by hand.
