  1. I just got my new 64bit machine at work yesterday with X9 installed. I am looking through the software trying to familiarize myself with it. I came from X5, so obviously a big jump.

I was talking with someone at my reseller a few months ago, and if I understood him correctly, he said that that X9 is all new and most basic 3D milling can be done in it. I was asking because I don't think my version of X5 was capabale of it, or that was a feature that was not purchased or somehting.

Excuse my ignornance of the software. I have never done any 3D milling and I'd really like to try.

I searched for 3D threads here but could not get results to come up, although I'm sure there are plenty here.

Just curious how I might tell exactly what level my X9 is at (if it has levels) or if someone can explain this to me.

    I appreciate it.

One thing you'll love jumping from X5 to X9 is all the new bugs.

  2. Just out of curiosity, a sweep cut won't give what you want to cut?

Can you share the profile of the job? I have never had anything that I couldn't model. Some stuff took a while to figure out occasionally but I've always got the end result.

Yes, a sweep will. My guess he he will spend the next 90 minutes looking at his broom to try and figure it out.  :guitar:

  3. Our problem is we have a solid of the hobb and need a total boolean subtract from the gear blank that would simulate the profile. This PROFILE IS NOT JUST A CIRCLE! It has two flats at the top !

lol. How are we supposed to know what the part looks like?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The circle was just an example. Make it whatever shape you like.  Like I said. Your post was not very specific.

    :guitar:

Is there a way to trade my guitar for a banjo?

  4. kind of unspecific but:

    Create circle.

    Create gear profile around circle

create helix (if needed for twist)

If no twist extrude profile and circle and then to boolean to add or subtract to part.

If using twist, create swept solid of profile and circle and then to boolean to add or subtract to part.

  5. Guitar,

Whats funny as most Mastercam customers don't know that they get a option for a OEM upgrade discount to the Pro for every seat of MC they have.

That's not funny. That's sad. Cimco is one of the most useful tools on the planet. Yeah, we got a great discount with our MC subscription.

BTW...I made some really nice macro templates for Fanuc and Brother machines if anyone wants them. They have alot of helpful diagrams and output basic code lines for beginner programmers, or for simple fixturing without having to boot up MC..

  6. I'm curious to see what your thoughts are on milling these fins.

These were done on a vertical mill with a wheel cutter. I don't know the feed or doc specs he used but it took all day. I'm curious to see how to speed this feature up.

The fins are spaced . 250 apart

    1.75 deep

    15 inches long

Horizontal, arbor mill power fed with a stack of slitting saws spaced appropriately. You can probably do it in 1 pass in about a half an hour.

  7. I pay my respect by using this program for20 years.

In the country where Mastercam is not dominant at all.

I think this fact alone means something .

May be CNC software can pay respect me for my affection and loyalty ?

    Best regards .

What is the dominant software in your country?

  8. Sometimes when shops start small and the owner is the first employee and machinist shops will by what they can get for a good price as the shop grows.

I work for a company that has been in business for 30 years and they still have this mentality. They have 50 machines. Of course they bought everything with absolutely no options, like through spindle coolant. Yeah, they were all great, fell-off-the-truck bargains. Haas indexers on fanuc mills. But, when they want to make life a headache they got every possible option to do that.

  9. I have had to clean up messes from people who thought they were SOOO smart.....believe me, a customer doesn't like downtime because some yahoo with a god complex made something far more complicated then need be and that he just wants it to work.

It's a cool notion but once that person leaves wherever they were, much of it tends to falls apart.

and that's when the reseller has to go in and pick up the mess

    But enough, sorry about hijack!

That's a great mentality. Are you running Mastercam v1 on windows 3.1?

  10. I have had to dig through those kinds of post after the "genius" has left........it can turn into a complete effin' nightmare in those cases

Well, instead of whining about the fact that he did something different than what you would do (as machinists typically do to get the spotlight put on themselves about how they saved the world from something that did not need to be fixed) write your own and stop whining. Then maintain many posts when only 1 is needed. Yup, makes alotta sense, in a 3rd world sort of way. My post works flawlessly.

  11. How do you handle different control/machine definitions?

Let's just say, in order to make the user's life easier, the programmers task may be harder. Yes. Everything in the post had to be broken down by control/machine type and controlled with "If/then"  type statements. It works like a charm. Getting it going was a b1tch though.
