Corner Rounding Endmills

Just wondering if I am missing a really neat chook or op to use corner rounding endmills. Currently I use the contour op on the edge, select the corner rounding tool, set the depth for the radius (roughly - depends on the "nose" or spigot length) and have at it. Make a cut, adjust the depth and xy offset, repeat until happy.

I searched but only found a thread back in 2002 basically asking if the function was around.

Good Day,

MM,

All I do is specify the pilot diam. and seems

to work ok (pilot being the bottom of the

radius...or the minor diam ) then verify.

Most corner rounders have common pilots.

CNCme,

I was just having "fun" sneaking up on a micro part with .020 radius tools - the biggest "problem" that I have is actually with the way the tool is defined. There doesn't seem to be a way to specify the pilot length unless I completely redefine the basic radius tool to work that length into the tool definition. At the moment, I do it the same way you do... It seems that the only way that I can accurately get the nose length (and diameter for that matter) right now is to measure it on an optical comparator or just keep sneaking up on the final result.

Hi

IMHO No chook is going to know the demensions

on the radii tool I may be useing.

When I make my solid with radii on it, that gives me the wire at the radii's blue print depth. Then

I use the comparator for the pilot diameter and lenght of cut. Any depth differances are controled in

"Z Stock

to leave"

Then I record that radii tool in my tool libray

for next time.

This way I can give my tool list to the floor

and they can set all the tools to the same zero

with some degree of confidence.

Gary,

The tool definition for the corner rounding tool is lacking. I suggested some improvements/additions to CNC and they liked it so we'll see if the definition makes it into X.

Good Day,

MM,

Most, if not all corn rnders, are not standard,

and they are not full 90 deg. arcs unless

they are custom made . pilots are a little

extended with a 1 deg. flare ... but I can

see with small ( .02 rads), you gotta be

close... HTH

  • 2 months later...

I don't really see why this isn't an extension of 2D Chamfering? I tried it for the first time the other day which is why I searched and found this thread. I just want to run a radius mill around the edges of a 2D part to give it a more finished look. MC doesn’t have any Radius mills in the library we have so I had to program one my self. I found MC won’t let you assign a chamfer tool path with this cutter so I wound up Copying and existing contour path and changing the Z depth and offset till I got close to what I was looking for. Anyone have any suggestions for doing this a better way, or adding similar finishing touches to parts?

Thanks

Peter-
