Ya know.... as I was setting up a new drill in a collet holder (commoon practice for me) I got to thinking, what kind of rocket scientist would think it's a good idea to STAMP on the shank of a tool??? It took 3 shots to get the tool concentric within .0003"

James teh thinking out loud...

James,

I would suggest the use of a higher quality drill for your .0003" requirements. PTD has an undercut area on the drill shank where the part numbers are rolled on. Some of the more economical series jobber drills are manufactured off shore and marketed locally at an unbelivable prices but this step is omitted.

I like the parabolic flute HSCO drills - Coated ofcoarse, but its your money that I am spending on this application right!

I just got an indexable drill last week put it in a commmand xt collet chuck on a mori mill and... .003" runout (yes .003").

Called local rep who told me it's within a tolerance!!! WTF

If we made parts like this we would be out of business.

Precision Twist seems to alternate between stamping and laser; or the different sizes have been in stock for different times...WTF?

My personal favorite are carbide reamers: $40 gets you a 3mm reamer that runs .0001 on the shank at the collet chuck and .0009 flute-to-flute; WTF is that about? Then they say, 'Oh, grinding the flutes concentric to the shank is an additional charge...' bonk.gif

Yeah, $40 for something 1/2 the size of a pencil is soooooooooo reasonable to start with curse.gif

F_cking crooks
