But You can boot from win 98 setup disk into the

command prompt and make it there ,so if your cd works you can do it from the cd

True, but that's more directories that he'd have to CD into. Unless he then pops the floppy in after booting off of the CD. In which case, he might as well just as booted from the floppy.

trust me, if it had been me i'd have used the voucher good towards the upgrade for $20 that was included with the purchase as soon as possible. but you know how females are (insert smack from the female contigent here ), as long as it works most of the time so be it !!

 

i'm going to call her tonight and suggest she do that if she plans on keeping it for awhile.

 

incidentally, even if i upgrade to XP, i will still have to back up her files she wants to keep correct?

Yup, definitely back up the files that she needs (term papers, homework, pictures, etc). For XP to run smoothly, you'll want to do a fresh install (which means formatting the drive). And during the install when given a choice to format with FAT or NTFS, choose NTFS.

why not try and run adware and spyware removers before taking such drastic action?I do this all the time to computers that are hopeless and most of the time they end up working fine once the crap is off.

 

She will have a billion windows ME updates to install afterwards if you decide to stick with it... Windows ME is bad bad news.

one last question: if i upgrade it to XP, will i still be able to reinstall the microsoft office programs that came with the computer? i'm pretty sure they are on a cd of their own seperate from ME.

I say yes ,but many will say you that XP has it`s own Office package ,anyway you can install an older one (checked )
