wierd machine orientation

A customer of mine has a new machine whose "across" orientation is known as "y" and whose along orientation is "x". Is there a way to set up mastercam to work for this?

 

I have been playing with it for a while and can't seem to find anything.

I never tried that, but couldn't you just rotate the part?

You could create a new wcs or just rotate the operation before you post. As far as setting mc to display Y axis as right to left I'm not sure if you can do it. Never had to. I did run an Agie wire machine for a spell that was set up the same as you say so I feel your pain.

Do you mean that what is normaly x is now y ? Are there any rotary axis involved ? If so it would be worth changing it to industry standard Right Hand Rule eliminate the need for a custom post.

That is exactly what I hope to do. I can't honestly believe somebody built a mill like this.

 

What I would like to do is set mcam up so that it looks like normal top view but with x and y in each other's positions. problem is: it goes against the entire drafting world.

 

I'll have to see if the machine is set so that all x values are negative? Wow. I need to think some more.

If you think that's bad. I had to program a 5 axis machine that had the spindle/tool axis perpendicular to the z axis. We didn't drill with it but if we did it would have been using y, or x and y depending where the c axis was looking. Lost some hair on that one !

sounds like fun.

 

this is a more common thing we've seen. mostly we see it with bridge machines. I ended up having him rotate his tool plane about the origin. seems to work fine.

If you don't have to change the sign, you could just change the letters in the FMT statement for X and Y. If you DO have to change the sign:

x1 = -x or y1 = -y and output x1 or y1.

Ive never heard of a machine like this.

Is it a brand new machine?

What is the make/model?

If it's used,maybe the servo wires are connected to the wrong axis'

You can't just swap the x & y. You have to swap the I and the J also or it will be all screwed up. The Axes are swapped like this on a twin table router so we had it done in the post. I can send you a my twin table post and you might can figure out what the post writer did.

Welcome to my world. I have 3 routers none of them have the same axis layout. One machine is right, one machine has x,y rotated, ond one machine has x&y reversed. I wish all the machine tool builders would stick with the cartesian coordinate system.

I ended up having him rotate the tool plane 90 degrees, everything seems to work fine. I did a sample posting, everything seems to be working now.

 

 

These machines are apparently pretty common.
