HEAVY METAL

i got a roll that is 36 in long 12 dia. the info they have given me is 3.125 lead helix in 36 inches. what i.m trying to figure out is how many deg. to rotate to get 3.125 lead. i figured how many inches per deg off the circumf. then took 3.125 / by that and cam up witj about 29 deg. doesn't seem right though.

I might not understand your layout correctly, but I believe that if the lead is 3.125", then the form on the roll should "feed" 3.125" per revolution of the roll. Along the 36" roll will be approximately (just under)12 full turns. I am not sure what else they could mean by a 3.125 lead helix in 36 inches. You only need to use the circumference to calculate the flat pattern of the helix.

trying to do a toolpath by using axis sub. 2.9856 is the distance i figured in y for my contour. a line start of X0 Y0 to X36 Y 2.9856. i came up with tihs figure by un rolling the 3.125 lead on a 12 dia. did a verify and does not look right . 5.732 is the distance from center to bottom of key. i also off set line 1.38 from center because this is what they call out plus another 1/2 for 1/2 the cutter dia. they want a land of .125 width between grooves. looks like i got my figures wrong or they do. like an opinion

thanks heavy
