pipe tap

I define it just like a regular tap.

I set the dia of the tool at the size of the fininsh point on the tap. Threads are 18 TPI

If you want an accurate display to use in backplot you'll have ato create it as a custom tool.

I don't think its going to matter as far as the tap goes... as long as you've entered 18 in the threads part of the parameter page... It should pick that up when figuring feed rate... Just double check in the program... You could even change the diameter on the tap in the parameters page to whatever you want and save it to your library as a pipe tap... Does this help?

Nope, on an NPT thread gage there is generally a flat where the gage is supposed to go down to for it to be st the proper depth.

I measure at that point on the gage.

The size is not going to be a huge issue though, it'll tap no matter what size you tell it. It only matters slightly if you want your back plot to look reasonably close.

quote:

I use .437 Dia. drill for 1/4-18 NPT and go .710 deep with the tap to get the standard plug to sit flush.

I've got .440 Ø, I don't dare set a depth, too many taps around here that have been ground back for shallower use. smile.gif

well I just want to go deep enough to get a few threads to start with and finish by hand.. Im just concerned about diameter settings is all.. I will probablly only go about .500 for depth and run the tap by hand down to my needed depth..So Im assuming and diameter will work and then just specify 18 as my threads per inch...
