Metric 6 x 1 Tap

Recommended Posts

I am making a part that needs 2 holes tapped with a Metric 6mm x 1 Tap. When I do the toolpath in MR2, the tool shows up and is like 5 inches in diameter in verify. It doesn't matter, as long as the speed and feed is right for the tap. I know how to calulate the speed and feed for American Standard taps, but how do you do it for metric taps? I just want to make sure that Mastercam is doing that right atleast.

For a 6mmx1 tap, 1/25.4 x RPM = feed

For any metric tap the second number is your pitch not the number of threads per inch, although this pitch is metric. Just convert to english and multiply by your RPM. Also to make your tap look OK in verify divide your diameter by 25.4 on your toolpath parimeters page.

Why not just convert it to inches, and then save it in your library?

This is what I do too. Works great!

Someone mentioned in the past a "Use Metric Values" switch in the tool definition page. I can't remember if I tried it, but maybe that would allow you to use the metric values and have it show up at the proper size.

No need to use a calculator to do the conversion.

In the tool definition window, where you type in the Ø of a tool. If you type in 6mm it will automatically convert it to decimal for you.

Don't forget the pitch either 1mm

Then you can name it 6MM x 1.0 tap and keep it in you regular tool library.
