Rough contour depth question

I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong, I am doing a rough contour, and I have .01 on the drive surfaces. what I want it to do is make even depth cuts to the flats leaving .01 on the flat, then do the same at the next flat. whats going on is its either leaving to much material or its taking a .01 finish pass and still leaving .01 on each face. any ideas?

In the Cut Depths box, do you have incremental with the default of .01 on? (that i'll do it)

 

I almost always set the absolute values.

I tried both ways, i agree i usually set mine to absolute as well.

Ok, if I use incremental depths and select critical depths and select each boss height and my max z point, it seems to work out. is this the corect way to do it?

Ok, I got the depth cuts figured out, now what I am trying to do is add a finish pass. I am having troubles applying cutter comp, with a normal 2-d contour I have my compensation type to wear. I tried to use a restmill pass, then I tried a surface finish contour pass. With both passes, I dont see anywhere to add comp type to the operation, am I missing somthing, or is it possible to add dia comp to these operations?

I don't think you can use comp on surface toolpaths.

You can lie about the cutter size to fake it.I'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

I tried messing around with the 3d comp c-hook, that just crashes my mastercam, not sure what that is supost to do.

3D comp only works on machines that support 3D cutter compensations. This is usually available only on higher end controls.
