Mastercam compatibility with Omax

Hello, I'm new here. I just purchased an Omax 2652 Abrasive Waterjet. The Omax software is quite complete but lacks 2 key features for my needs. 1. Does anyone have experience using Mastercam for true algorithmic nesting? 2. Does anyone know if Mastercam will remember where the waterjet left off if we need to temporarily switch to a different material? Does Mastercam interface with the Omax software effectively?

We're in the process of working with Omax to produce a post for their waterjets. There is quite a bit of customization that can be built into the post based on the specific needs of the customer (ie question number 2 which could be resolved using some special programming and a custom post). Again this is something that we are just starting to get into, but we will be developing an effective solution with Omax.

Thank you Chris, that is helpful. As I get more familiar with the Omax software, I am realizing that there may be an effective solution within their software, just not in the way I am envisioning it. I think a post is probably the best solution. When you say "this is something that we are just starting to get into, but we will be developing an effective solution with Omax.", is there a timeline to that? Who should I talk to about a custom post?

I'm the lead post developer on the project. This has more been a request from Omax's side of things, to try and get a mastercam solution for their machine. We haven't seen too many customer requests for these posts yet, so it hasn't been the highest priority, but getting an order for one of these posts would definitely push it up the list. So to make a long story short there really isn't a time line for it, but if you're looking for a post for it we can speed up the process and you should contact your local reseller (Sierra CAD/CAM) I believe and request the In-House Solutions post for your machine.

Feel free to drop me a line if you need any help...

Anyone out there care to weigh in on Mastercam's nesting add-in or their experiences with other nesting software?

We did a demo with the nesting add-in and were a little disappointed. I beat it handily with 2 hours of work manually nesting parts in Solidworks (gotta love parametric modeling). My neophyte efforts in 2 hours yielded 1 extra part out of a 4'x8' sheet sheet and 2 out of a 5'x10'. The parts were sort of an oddly shaped crescent, but handling such things is why you pay for nesting software in first place. These parts were about 20" x 40" and made from Titanium so netting an additional part per sheet would have easily covered the price of the software. If another job like that comes along we would be very interested in some top notch nesting software.
