Dialing in collet chucks on a dual spindle machine

1)Assemble main spindle collet system. Dial in main spindle true. Make sure you dial in the collet SEAT TAPER and not a collet.

 

2)Then, when main is running true within .0001 or less, mount a collet (or pads) the size to fit your coax indicator stub, and make sure it is running within .0001 (or best you can).

 

3)Put the coax indicator in the collet in the main spindle.

 

4) Mount collet system in sub spindle do not mount collet.

 

5) Indicate sub spindle true to main W/in .0001 to sub spindle collet SEAT TAPER. do not install a collet yet.

 

6) When you are satisfied with runout (or lack of), mount collet or pads, to fit a GROUND and STRAIGHT W/in .0002 bar. Check bar runout to main using coax still mounted in main.

 

7)Move an ID holder (that you know is good) to your normal centerline X position, and check runout to main spindle. This can be done with coax in main. It should not be different than with chuck, but may. Adjusting X centerline position may be necessary.
